This unique spot in Utah makes the perfect backdrop for any couple looking to tie the knot outdoors, with stunning scenery and easily accessible views. Today, the Bonneville Salt Flats are an otherworldly sight, with the salt crust stretching over 300,000 acres, surrounded by mountains. Everyone thought I was crazy to try so much in one day, but it was what I wanted and it worked for me.At the end of the last Ice Age, the ancient Lake Bonneville began to dry up, leaving behind salt deposits as the water receded. It was the most fantastic day that I still remember with great fondness. I had English friends drive and they also took me to see Salisbury Cathedral and Winchester and had lunch at an authentic english pub out in the country somewhere. There was no way I was going to be that close and not see it. When I went to London for the first time I was with a group and we had one day free. Whether it is worth it depends on what your priorities are and how much over all time you can afford to spend on it. It is about 90 min drive to Wendover from SLC. I have a friend who has tried it twice and gotten stuck both times.īut it is fun just to walk out and feel small against all that white. If it is at all wet you go through the salt and hit the mud and can get stuck, so drive out on your own risk. It is a very thin layer of salt and then mud and clay underneath. The salt changes over the course of the year and sometimes it is not good to drive on. If you want to drive out on them then you need to get into town and find the road from there to the main driving area. There is a rest area east of town where you can walk out on them. But the best views are from the area around Wendover.
